I eat my yard! Do you eat yours?
I recently watched a Ted Talk on " How we can eat our landscapes" by Pam Warhurst. Pam outlines how she and a small team of volunteers turned a love of gardening and unused land into personal responsibility and kindness to each other.
I love gardening. I love the fresh vegetables and fruit that I grow. When I serve a meal that I produced from tiny seeds in our back yard, everything tastes better. The eggs, or butt nuggets as the twins like to call them have spoiled us. I can no longer eat eggs at a restaurant. Spending time working in the garden and tending to our animals helps keep me grounded. It brings peace and joy to my life, and it balances everything out.
I often daydream about what it would be like to win the "Big Lotto." I would purchase a huge plot of land. I would provide my community with a place for families and children to learn how to take care of the earth. A place where vegetables are grown and served to those who need a meal. Where teens and young adults can learn how to mend a fence, milk a cow, paint a barn. As I said, I daydream a lot! "How we can eat our landscapes" taught me that every small action counts. I loved Pam Warhurst's quote, "We are not daunted by the sophisticated arguments that say these small actions are meaningless in the face of tomorrow's problems. I have seen the power of small actions, and it is awesome".
If you are interested in urban gardening and community service, I recommend watching How we can eat our landscapes The Ted Talk is humorous and inspirational.
